Common digital marketing acronyms

When it comes to digital marketing the acronyms come thick and fast. Here we explain some common terms.

SEO - Search Engine Optimisation - This is about making sure your website and the content in it are optimised so search engines can find it, understand what it's about and rank it well in a relevant search.

SERP - Search Engine Result Page - This refers to the web page generated after someone has searched for a keyword or phrase. Your aim is to be placed high for searches relevant to your business, as higher ranked placements get more clicks.

SEM - Search Engine Marketing - This is a paid marketing approach of buying adverts on search engines.

PPC - Pay Per Click - This refers to an online advertising approach where you pay a certain amount of money everytime someone clicks your advert. Sometimes this is fixed per click (see CPC below) or a daily budget set.

CPC - Cost Per Click - The is the actual amount of money you pay for each click your online advert gets. To calculate CPC, divide the total cost of your marketing campaign by the number of clicks you received.

CPM - Cost Per Thousand - This is the standard unit for buying or selling advertising and refers to the cost of 1,000 impressions or views.

CR - Conversion Rate - This is the % of people that completed the action you wanted them to on your website, i.e. filling out a form, downloading a piece of content.

CRO - Conversion Rate Optimisation - This is about making sure your website is optimised to make it as easy as possible for visitors to take the action you want them to, i.e. fill out a form, download a piece of content.

CTA - Call To Action - This is a button, image or text link which encourages a visitor to do more on your website - this can be anything from clicking a call now button to downloading a piece of content.

CTR - Click Through Rate - This is the % of visitors that click your CTAs and move through your marketing campaign from one stage to the next. It's calculated by dividing the total number of clicks a page gets by the number of CTAs or opportunities for clicks.
